How To Keep Your Bathroom Clean In 5 Minutes A Day

Hate the bathroom chore? Want to spare days’ worth of cleaning? No reason to block off the entire day of cleaning. Here are some substantially quick ways to keep your bathroom clean in 5 minutes a day.

The bathroom can get messy, faster, whatever you do to keep it clean. Especially with little kids. Big family = cleanup.

Doing a tiny bit each day can help you keep things manageable.

The best way to keep your bathroom neat and clean is by assigning 5 minutes, every day.

You’ll be amazed at how much this 5-minute bathroom cleaning routine will save you labor and time, during your deep cleaning sessions.

Now, it is up to you. Either you allocate 5 minutes each day and do the cleaning in one stroke. Or break up the 5-minute routine and do a little bit of cleaning every time you’re in the bathroom.

Both ways work just fine provided you keep at it.

How To Keep Your Bathroom Clean In 5 Minutes A Day

    Pro tip:

    • Following the steps in the same order every day – beginning and ending in the same place will prevent toing and froing.
    • Another way to save time is by having an organized cleaning caddy — a bucket full of cleaning supplies ready.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR BATHROOM CLEAN IN 5 MINUTES A DAY

    Prepare — Time: 30 seconds

Open the windows to air out the bathroom. Start by spraying the shower, toilet, sink, and counters with a cleaner to allow some time to let the product do the work while you complete step 2.

Clear the surfaces — Time: 1 minute

Store the out-of-place items. Including everything from gadgets (blow-dryers/hair straighteners) to knick-knacks (face wash, toothpaste, hairbrush, skincare/makeup products.

Take off used towels. Remove any dirty washing. Place it into the laundry basket.

    Cleanup — Time: 2 minutes

Using a paper towel or microfibre cloth – wipe down the mirror, sink, counters, and bath fixtures that we had sprayed earlier. Squeegee shower walls and floors. Work your way top-down.

Quickly wipe off the toilet tank, the external face of the toilet, the lid, the seat, and the rim with paper towels. Scrub the toilet pretty quick and flush.

Dust the bath rugs — Time: 30 seconds

Dust off the bath rugs before you sweep or mop the floors. This small step makes a big difference in keeping the bathroom lint and soil-free.

    Sweep/mop the floor — Time: 1 minute

    Lastly, clean the floor.

I prefer wiping the floors with a damp mop over sweeping. Still, sweeping makes for a good option when pushed for time. This is the final step of your daily 5-minute bathroom cleaning routine.

End step — Time: 10 seconds

Lastly, place fresh towels. Turn on the fragrant diffuser filled with essential oils. And, you’re ready to go.

  • How To Create A Laundry System That Works

How To Create A Laundry System That Works

Drowning in the laundry? Does the laundry mountain keep growing despite the implementation of a good few hacks? There’s a big chance of you using a laundry system that isn’t working for you.

Miss a day or two of doing the laundry and you have the washer jam-packed with this monstrous pile of washing; some more overflowing the hamper. Plus, clean laundry is all over the place.

Where did you get that? You wonder.

All of that is a great sign of a terribly managed laundry system.

We’ve hundreds of different views about the laundry system. Everyone has their unique solution.

Our family size, occupation, execution of the system, and amount of assistance all play a part in the effectiveness of our laundry system. Now, how do you find a better method?

A laundry routine consists of – washing, drying, and PUTTING AWAY clothes. Failure to attain even one of these can cause the entire process to crumble.

Not only that but looking at the big picture, the entire functioning of your house could be affected simply by failing to do the laundry.

How To Create A Laundry System That Works For You

Today let’s take on this major chore and figure out how to create a laundry system that really works for you.

HOW TO CREATE A LAUNDRY SYSTEM THAT WORKS FOR YOU

    Establish a sorting system:

Have a basket assigned to each one of your family members. Kids should have their own laundry basket too. They should be encouraged to sort and put their dirty washing in their designated basket.

Play around with colors, and numbers as you have them sort their clothes.

Another way is having baskets with labels for sorting clothes by muddiness, color, fabric, usage, weight – heavier/lighter fabric, etc. Like one basket for whites and another for dark clothes.

    Set up everything beforehand:

Sort the clothes. Pretreat the whites or stained clothes.

Soak denim/sheets/linens in warm water with a little detergent the previous night.

    Load washer.

This will help you set the pace.

    Daily or weekly routine

Some people prefer daily, others weekly.

Instead of arguing about the correct way, let’s find a balance between the two.

I do laundry every single day.

I recommend no less than twice weekly.

    • Home wear, underclothes, towels, and sheets/bedcovering on weekdays as they don’t need much care.
    • Office wear/delicate clothing (that needs special handling) on weekends.

Feel free to wash linens/sheets and towels with your regular clothing. If you wash them regularly, they don’t need presoaking/pretreating.

That way, you won’t have to wait until the weekend for a fresh pair of underwear.

And unnecessarily worry about the massive load of laundry on the weekend.

Additionally, if that moderates even one load of washing and putting away, if not more, you can utilize that time to complete ironing on the same day (weekend).

Your laundry routine will also depend on the size of your family. A large family must do at least one load daily to prevent a mountain of laundry.

Read: How To Get Motivated To Clean

Consider the size of the load:

The user manual states the capacity of your washing machine. It can help you determine the size/weight of your wash load.

Follow the instructions carefully to optimize the results.

A big wash load will prevent the flow of the wash cycle. Clothes won’t come out as clean as intended.

A smaller load will cost you more referring to — soap, hot water, and electric power usage.

    Moderateness is the key.

    Line dry:

Line drying will save the dryer time.

A big pile can easily be hung in one go.

When the weather doesn’t permit hanging clothes outside, these racks seem practical and cost-efficient.

put away the clean clothes immediately:

I know the likelihood of assuming I’ll fold all the clothes (together) at the end.

But folding all 6-7 loads jointly will make it more challenging.

And if you only want to get it done altogether in the end, you can have your kids fold with you.

    Another basket for clean clothes:

Don’t have time to put away clean clothes?

It is understood. Things get in the way.

Keep a separate basket to fold & put the clean laundry as you take them off.

Rather than throwing clean laundry on a chair (which your kids might scatter sooner or later), fold and stack it nicely in a basket so that it’s easier for you to arrange later.

Another useful idea is to keep a small container around the washer to collect small objects pulled from the pockets before putting clothes into the washer.

    Iron only if necessary:

One of my high school friends used to iron her underwear too.

    I mean, really?

The point is, depending on the texture, usage, and occasion see if ironing is required.

If it’s truly necessary do not hesitate to reschedule it for a Monday evening.

    Final words:

This simplest laundry system has helped me tame the laundry monster and reduce chaos. It makes me feel in control of things.

What laundry system do you follow? Don’t forget to share it with me in the comments section below. Thank you so much for reading. Happy Cleaning!

  • How To Get Motivated To Clean

How To Get Motivated To Clean

The holiday season is here, it’s time to shake things up a little bit at home.

During this time of the year, when you just want to get cozy snuggling up in your warm blanket with a hot cup of coffee. Cleaning is the last thing on your mind.

Sunny mornings have something to brighten up your mood and get you to clean without thinking much. Fall cleaning? Certainly calls for motivation.

How To Get Motivated To Clean

If you’re still easing up, I’m here to help you with some tips and tricks to get motivated to clean.

HOW TO GET MOTIVATED TO CLEAN

    Have a cleaning caddy:

Firstly, in order to make the cleaning process convenient, buy yourself the appropriate tools. Trying a new appliance or product is a great way to get motivated to clean.

Having a well-organized caddy will make cleaning the entire house a lot easier (grab and go).

Check out why you must own proper cleaning tools and some affordable options here

    Dress suitably:

Outfit changes our attitude. So dress up for success.

I have a separate pair of cleaning outfits. Something comfortable and nice-looking. I also like to tie my hair up in a bun and wear my apron and gloves.

    Identify your cleaning personality type:

Do you like to get the cleaning done in one go or one thing at a time? Determine your cleaning personality type to work accordingly.

If you’re someone who likes to clean in one go, set aside two or three days depending upon the level of cleaning. Dedicate those days to cleaning only.

What I do on the days I deep clean is – order food from outside and use disposable cups and plates to save additional workload – cooking and cleaning. I also skip the laundry that day. I don’t blog and don’t exercise. Instead, I only spend my time cleaning to get it done as quickly as possible. That saves me energy and time from my daily activities and helps me get the deep cleaning done real quick.

    Limit the time:

I love how The fly lady says “your house didn’t get messy overnight don’t expect it to get clean in a night “.

Ascertaining time is the key to getting motivated to clean. The timer technique does well in this case.

Stopping amidst a project you could no longer resist the urge to clean the next day.

    Speed up:

Often, the chores take lesser time than we think.

Getting lost/consumed in thoughts or distracted by your phone or TV reduces our pace of work drastically. But actually being sluggish is a huge stumbling block too. Nobody wants tedious tasks.

Similarly, some mistakes can impede speed.

For many years, I didn’t realize what was taking me so much time to do just a few dishes. Then I figured I was using the dish detergent excessively. By excessively I mean awfully.

I don’t know what got me thinking more product means cleaner utensils. In fact, more product means 5x times more rinsing; more waste of water; more cleaning to do. Plus, it is harmful to your health if the dishes didn’t get rinsed properly.

One way to increase your working speed is by recording the time it takes you to complete each task (from start to finish). Then, next time, while performing the same tasks set the timer five minutes early than the time you require to finish them.

Challenge yourself to finish the task before the timer goes off, and do it well.

Practice this every day to increase your speed of work.

Make a cleaning checklist/use free printables:

Having a visual checklist will keep you sane. You’ll have a basic idea of what you want to accomplish.

With a list, nothing will be forgotten or undone. Printables will point out unremembered tasks.

It’ll help you keep track of your progress as well.

    Conquer OCD:

Once you have cleaned one thing really well. Proceed. Don’t get stuck in one place ensure everything is clean over and over again.

As we saw in the earlier post, there’s no such thing as perfection.

Don’t strive for it. Or you will feel unfulfilled all the time.

Remember done is always better than perfect.

    Avoid needless cleaning:

Clean only what needs care and attention. You shouldn’t get caught up with things that are clean already.

    Watch someone clean:

Watching someone else cleaning or working hard on their home is a surefire way to get motivated to clean. I have learned far simpler dusting, cleaning, and organizing techniques from YouTubers.

You can check out a few cleaning YouTube channels to see how they do things differently than what you’re doing.

Are you following an inappropriate cleaning sequence, using the wrong tools, or following improper methods? Is there anything you do inaptly?

A friend or an aunt who always has a clean home can be your perfect cleaning guru as well.

    Final words:

Forget about festivities, for ones like me, need the motivation to clean – Every. Single. Day.

So, I keep on looking for ways that make cleaning dreadless.

I hope these tips will come in useful and get you motivated to clean.

  • One Simple Trick That’ll Transform Your Homemaking

One Simple Trick That’ll Transform Your Homemaking

You know the drill of a hectic life. Kids, chores, meals, guests, and making ends meet can leave you tired to the bones. However, there’s one simple trick that’ll transform your homemaking.

Most often, simple tricks add greater value to life. Yet we continue to remain unmindful of such extremely effective strategies. This misconduct keeps us from taking the lead in keeping our home.

How frequently do you recheck if the window glass is squeaky clean, wonder if you’ve disinfected the surfaces perfectly, whether the toiletries are lined up in symmetry, and the supreme one — check the nasty smell of your dish scrubber?

I know this is just beginner-level nitpicking. Some people are real perfectionists. How about in case of time constraints? No exit without burning out yourself in the process.

One Simple Trick That'll Transform Your Homekeeping

Do you really think these minute details matter at all in your daily life? With having someone over, these minutiae are appreciated. But how does that matter in the frantic life?

How can your house get so messy with the same people (your own family) living there? What is going to cause so much impurity/contamination?

Is it indeed a perfectionist, a false mindset, or a cleaning obsession?

ONE SIMPLE TRICK THAT’LL TRANSFORM YOUR HOMEMAKING

Want to know, what’s that one simple trick that’ll transform your homemaking?

AIMING FOR PROGRESS – NOT PERFECTION.

Ever observed how overpowering the strife for perfection is?

    Perfectionism is paralyzing.

It impairs decision-making and preludes swing into action. Perfectionism can make you procrastinate.

One Simple Trick That'll Transform Your Homekeeping

You always want to wait for that perfect time, perfect tools, and perfect skills to get even your basic things done.

We always have this preconceived idea about doing things. Usually, this preconception is idealistic. This makes a super simple task a MARATHON and yourself a professional procrastinator.

    [click_to_tweet tweet=”Perfection is an illusion based on our own perception . . . – about.com” quote=” Perfection is an illusion based on our own perception . . . – about.com”]

There’s no such thing as entirely clean or perfect – most probably you’re misled by your mind. It happens to all of us.

To become an efficient homemaker, you must get past that ‘all or nothing’ attitude.

Only then you can stay on top of homemaking. Such is the case in other matters of life, homemaking more importantly.

Homemaking is about savoring the moments as you move through the steady rhythm of your housework and not rushing into the chores.

In truth, even seasoned homemakers find home-keeping a drudgery at some point in their lives. We all have been there and know it’s a matter of fact.

But rather play the blame game why not figure some better way out?

How better than setting yourself reasonable standards.

Focusing on being good enough – not a perfectionist.

You want your home to function effectively to thrive in other areas of life. It’s possible when you know how to strike a balance between home and life.

Being a homemaker doesn’t mean you should immerse yourself in housework night and day. Nope, you have a life apart from that.

How can you apply this one trick in various spheres of home-keeping?

    1| Take action straight away:

The perfect occasion will come when pigs fly. Make headway with your work; one step at a time.

If you see something misplaced return it back forthwith. Don’t make an excuse that you’ll be back later. You hardly will. Do it that very moment.

    2| Simplify things:

Break up the chores or bigger cleaning, decluttering, or organizing projects into bite-size chunks.

For instance, to make the bathroom cleaning task easier – split the steps into daily and deep cleaning routines.

So on a deep cleaning routine, you can overlook the areas that you clean every day and focus more only on what isn’t cleaned regularly.

Make the chores the simplest possible and you’ll undoubtedly enjoy them, I promise.

Read: 10 Ways To Simplify Homemaking

    3|  Set realistic standards:

    Evaluate what is truly important.

One good example: to plan your meals you don’t necessarily need the fancy stuff you saw in that YouTube video, every time you meal plan.

You can use a simple pen and paper, a mobile app, or simply text messaging to make a list in a great hurry.

[click_to_tweet tweet=”The pursuit of excellence is gratifying and healthy. The pursuit of perfection is frustrating, neurotic, and a terrible waste of time.’ – Edwin Bliss” quote=”‘ The pursuit of excellence is gratifying and healthy. The pursuit of perfection is frustrating, neurotic, and a terrible waste of time.’ – Edwin Bliss”]

    4| Just do it:

Getting started is a huge obstacle, most frequently.

Once you get started you’ll want to keep going as you accomplish the tasks.

But to get started, you might want to trick yourself into doing it only for a few minutes.

I do this when I have a large stack of dishes in the sink. I trick myself to wash the dishes for no more than 10 minutes. And as I go for it I already have accomplished so much in those 10 minutes that I want to keep going until the end.

[click_to_tweet tweet=”Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect! – Aryn Kyle” quote=” Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect! – Aryn Kyle”]

    5| Focus on progress only:

If still, nothing motivates you to get the chores done remember you’re accountable for certain duties as a homemaker. You have to do them no matter what.

For that focus on progress only. Do not bother if you’re shining your house by making some special cleaners or following precise techniques. Strive to just be good enough with your housework. And eventually, you’ll get there.

    Final words:

I assure you this one trick — aiming for progress – not perfection will help you transform your homemaking.

7 Daily Disciplines For Every Homemaker

Daily Discipline? Does a homemaker even need that? You ponder.

People consider homemaking a worthless role, and homemakers – idle humans who do nothing but binge-watch Netflix and cuddle up on the couch!

But you know how fulfilling it is. And that homemakers have so many duties and responsibilities to minister.

To master domestic art discipline is essential.

    What is self-discipline?

According to dictionary.cambridge.org self-discipline means the ability to make yourself do things you know you should do even when you do not want to.

As explained by Merriam-webster.com self-discipline is the correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement.

Now, forget about being strict and disciplining yourself. We’re not going to complicate things here.

Remember you ought to serve specific duties when determining to be a homemaker.

Valuing your duties and achieving significant tasks (each day) is what we’re considering discipline here.

Today we’ll be concentrating on the mere essential duties of homemaking.

Even if you get nothing more done, these tasks ensure your home is in shipshape order.

7 DAILY DISCIPLINES OF A HOMEMAKER

    1. Make the bed:

This one comes first because the bedroom is where your day begins.

It is the last place you come to unwind, restore peace, and be at ease at the end of the day.

Thus, it must be your safe haven.

A freshly made bed can put you in a good mood and make the entire bedroom nice and neat.

It’s a subtle way to begin your day on the right foot.

    2. Take a shower:

I won’t stress much about getting dressed fully. Still, tidiness is necessary.

A quick shower is essential for hygiene and cleanliness since we tend to several nasty tasks throughout the day.

Scouring the toilet, dealing with pet litter, taking the trash out, etc. Plus, the dirt, oil, and sweat from handwashing dishes make getting cleaned necessary.

    3. Spend time with God:

Dwelling in God’s words is a must to lead a meaningful life.

You’ll nowhere find wisdom and guidance than as written in our sacred scriptures.

Ask God for help. The sagacity to lead you through your day-to-day life is of greater significance.

We come across so many good and bad situations every day.

Plenty of times, we don’t understand how to address the case. At those times, God’s teachings guide us to the right path.

    4. Fix meals:

Making all 4 (breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner) meals can be practicable for homemakers. But challenging for breadwinners.

Ensuring your family has something to eat at the start and end of the day takes the load off the mind.

As a homemaker, preparing and serving timely meals is your responsibility.

Arranging something for breakfast and dinner in the early hours will put your mind at ease all day.

    5. Do a load of laundry:

As I say, whether you have a large family or a small one, doing one load of laundry a few times a week will save a day of work on the weekend.

Stay-at-home, as well as work-at-home moms, will find it worthwhile.

Working mommies may need an alternative solution. You can find it in this post.

Simply one load every morning can leave you feeling accomplished throughout the day.

    6. Tidy up before bed:

    Tackle today’s mess today.

Run the dishwasher/handwash dishes. Wipe down the countertops. Quick scrub sink.

Call an after-dinner 10-minute house pick-up challenge for your family.

Let everyone be involved. Yes, the little ones can contribute too.

    Sweep/vacuum.

Get everything in order before concluding the day.

    7. Prep up for the next day:

Review the next day’s menu plan and prep as much as possible.

Get the most preparation done beforehand.

While doing this, see if you can fix something for breakfast.

Make sure – dirty washing is sorted and put in the washer. If anything needs pre-treatment. Also, if the kitchen is clean and set up for the next day.

    Set the breakfast table.

This will allow you to begin and end your day stress-free.

So those were my daily disciplines for every homemaker.
These daily disciplines ensure your home functions smoothly and help you be a better homemaker.

  • 11 Qualities Of A Successful Homemaker

11 Qualities Of A Successful Homemaker

Want to learn the qualities of a successful homemaker? Then this post is for you.

We devote a slew of time, work, and thoughtfulness to homemaking because we wish to be successful homemakers.

We want to put good food on the table, bring order to our home, and make our home a happy and relaxing place. In short, we want homemaking success.

    How do we get there?

Success in homemaking is achieved when you’re in control of/on top of things. When you’re happy and content with the efficient functioning of your home. Everything is hassle-free. Just the way you want it to be. Each night you go to bed gratified. Kids are happy! Hubby is happy! You’re happy!

11 Qualities Of A Successful Homemaker

11 QUALITIES OF A SUCCESSFUL HOMEMAKER

    1| Be content:

    with what you have.

Be thankful for the home and family you have. Being content in life is the key to happiness. You succeed when you’re happy with what you do.

Perhaps you’re in the process of buying a new house (your dream home). And the current house isn’t your favorite one or is thick with inconveniences. That shouldn’t make life in that house less enjoyable.

In fact, a successful homemaker can bring order to chaos, in any situation. Poor or wealthy.

Focusing on the positives is the key.

A life worth enjoying doesn’t always need to be Instagram-worthy, always. It can be enjoyed in a small house, with simple food and bare belongings.

As long as you’re truly content with whatever little you have, you’re wealthy.

True memories are made in messier homes within happy families and not perfect pictures shared on social media.

    2| Be patient:

Remember success comes to those who don’t give up.

Homemaking is no cakewalk. It is all about hard work and effort.

Patience can only get you there.

There will be ups and downs.

There will be times when you feel it is of no value.

Be patient in those times. Let that time go away. That time will pass over. And you’ll be glad you never gave up.

    3| Consistency is the key:

As stated previously, not every day is the same.

There will be highs and lows. Some days you’ll be more productive, other days not.

    Being consistent is essential.

Many times you have to show up come what may.

    Inconsistency can hinder your growth.

The housework may bulk up if you don’t tend to it now.

    4| Be willing to learn:

One of the finest traits of successful homemakers is their willingness to learn.

    Homemaking is a learned skill.

You get better at it with practice.

Before you put the skills into practice, you’ve got to observe, learn, experiment, and get it right through trial and error.

However, before that, you should be a better observer and a learner.

5| Be good with routines and systems:

    Sometimes, life gets hard.

You have everything flowing smoothly. You’re keeping up with everything so well and a sudden illness hits or a short trip queue up. Your home management gets out of hand. Things start piling up and go disorganized.

That’s when having consistent routines and systems comes in handy.

You can get back to your habituated routines in a flash.

    6| Be a giver:

I remember a couple of Buddha Quotes here

If you knew what I know about the power of giving, you would not let a single meal pass without sharing it in some way.

Before giving, the mind of a giver is happy; while giving the mind of a giver is made peaceful; and having given the mind of a giver is uplifted.

If homemaking is your purpose in life, I would say, put your heart and soul into it.

    7| Expect less:

    Hope forthe least in return.

Some people think homemaking is slavery.

We don’t get anything in return for our hard work.

    That’s quite not true.

    Homemaking is rewarding in itself.

Everything owned by Mother Nature is there to serve others.

Nothing in our natural habitat is self-seeking.

    We are here to give.

    Our grandmas’ were selfless homemakers.

They never received anything in return too.

In fact, they didn’t have trendy appliances and comforts like today.

They still achieved everything devoutly – without any expectations.

Want to know why? Because they loved us (their families) unconditionally.

To this day, they’re remembered for their selfless act. Their eternal love.

They’re adored for their hard work.

    8| Practice self-care:

As a homemaker, you must know where to draw the line.

As I always say homemaking is a never-ending job. You must realize that you’re a human, first.

You can’t pour from an empty vessel.

    Maintaining balance is crucial.

So, my lovelies, always remember to fill your cup first.

    9| Celebrate success:

Whenever your kids praise the delicious meal. Believe. It is your achievement.

When your husband says something good about the — decor piece you bought recently, your appearance, or the food you made,  embrace it.

When a visitor says — you have such an organized home. Welcome their words.

    These are your small wins.

These words will lift up your spirits.

You will want to give back more in return to your family, and to your home. Only when you accept their kind regards.

    10| Love your job:

Now that you’ve decided to wear a homemaker hat, accept it, unconditionally. And, why not, when you’re doing it for your family and loved ones.

Homemaking will be no hardship when you love and appreciate your job.

    11| Be joyful:

Finally and above all, be joyful all the time.

Whether your home is clean, dishes are done, food is ready, or whatever, meet everything with a smile.

You’re likely to find better solutions when you’re in a relaxed and happy state of mind.

    Final words:

Those were the qualities of a successful homemaker.

Being a successful homemaker like any other business requires great work, patience, skills, time, care, and nurturing. It is a generous job of serving your family and people who walk in through the door. Where you grow rich by giving wholeheartedly.

  • 5 Ways To Make Your Home A Haven

5 Ways To Make Your Home A Haven

A home, unlike the rest of the world, should be a warm, welcoming, and comfortable place to be.

A place where you can’t wait to retire after a busy day. A spot where, in contrast to workplace politics, toxicity, and sarcasm, someone awaits your arrival with a warm meal. Your own personal place where everything smells like you, seems like you, feels like you, sounds like you. Like your very own. Unique and special!

Irrespective of the level we criticize and take for granted, our home never ceases to shelter us in this wicked world. Did you ever happen to spend a day outside in an unfamiliar place? Or been in a situation when you were stuck at the airport or the train station platform the entire day/night?

At that very moment, you realize the significance of the home. The home that we make a fuss over. I have had such awful moments for quite a time, so I know it.

5 Ways To Make Your Home A Haven

What makes the home a comfortable place to be?

This article is inspired by the book Mrs. Dunwoody’s Excellent Instructions for Homekeeping. In this book, the author Miriam Lukken has explained The Art of Homekeeping by considering the five senses – sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. So today, let’s dive deeper to see how we can make our home a haven.

A haven for our family, for God, and for the visitors – by working on these 5 important elements of our home.

5 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME A HAVEN

    Sight:

According to the author, colors have a grand impact on our nerves and psychology. Thus, they need to be considered carefully. Different colors have different effects. Bold colors affect the mood strongly, whereas cool/pastel tones are soothing to the mind.

Rethink how you prefer each room. Understand the purpose of each room.

Do you like a simplistic look with bare essentials or a flashy design with an enthralling mix of books, relics, couture, etc.?

    Smell:

The sense of smell is strongly connected to memory. Whether it’s an appetizing dish from childhood or the fresh orchards in the garden.

The smell can be a powerful feature in making our home a haven.

Observe the smell in the house when you’re home from outdoors.

Does it smell pleasant or stale/moldy? Make your home smell fresh by taking out the trash regularly.

What fragrance do you and your family love? The smell of lavender, freshly ground coffee, or simmering lemon zest? Maybe aromatic candles, incense, or essential oils? Whatever choice of aroma you pick for your home, airing out by opening the windows can never go out of style.

    Touch:

    How does your home feel?

How often do you change sheets, wash curtains, clean rugs, sort mail, and declutter toys? Are there knick-knacks, books, laundry far and wide?

The cleanliness, luminosity, and comfort of your home can make a huge impact on how cozy you feel.

    Sound:

How does your day-to-day life sound?

Loud and noisy, or quiet and peaceful?

I have seen a lot of families turn their televisions on well ahead of breakfast and shut them down at bedtime. Some people like upbeat music while getting ready for the office.

At the same time, some people’re more of windchimes, soft piano, and a home bursting into laughter of family and friends.

Reduce the noise in the room. Play some soothing music or mantras for a peaceful ambiance.

    Taste:

Do you love to serve your guests a gourmet menu or just simple, nourishing meals?

Are you a formalist host who wants a perfectly set, color-coded, and well-decorated table with everything from appetizers to drinks to the main course out and out for their guests?

Or just believe in the idea of quality versus quantity?

Decide and get ahead of having a guest-ready party plan by jotting down every small detail in a notebook.

    Final Words:

All of these areas deserve attention as we strive to make our home a haven, a most special place for our loved ones. A home that witnesses composure, beauty, and inventiveness. As author Miriam Lukken says, “Home should be a place where we can grow and thrive, and live and love, to the fullest extent”.

Don’t forget to share your thoughts. Thank you so much for reading. Happy Homemaking!

  • 5 Golden Homemaking Rules You Must Follow

5 Golden Homemaking Rules You Must Follow

The homemaking rules of different families may look discrete from each other. But knowingly or unknowingly we do follow certain homemaking rules.

The rules are based on our priorities, terms, and values. Although our home management tasks remain the same (cooking, cleaning, organizing, budgeting), our preferences may differ.

Example: For some people, money isn’t an issue. So, they pay (outsource) to do the cleaning, cooking, organizing, and decorating for them.

Whereas others work hard to learn skills to save every possible penny.

They cook delicious meals on a budget; discover the easiest cleaning and repair hacks to do everything on their own and make their family thrive on a humble budget.

Whatever your homemaking status is — the basic principles remain the same for everyone. Today, we will review the homemaking rules every homemaker should follow.

5 Homemaking Rules You Should Follow

5 GOLDEN HOMEMAKING RULES YOU MUST FOLLOW

Focus on being productive instead of busy – Tim Ferriss

Classify your productive and non-productive tasks.

Busyness in no way means productivity.

Especially if the accomplished tasks do not get your home functioning well.

Say, getting dinner on the table before your husband arrives is your main goal but all you did the entire day is decluttered, organized, and decorated your bedroom.

Imagine, the dread you’d go through when you see him walk in. That’s certainly not a good use of your time.

Homemaking can be enjoyed when it doesn’t become drudgery.

This can only happen when you get your most important (non-negotiable) tasks out of the way at the beginning of your day.

In order to enjoy the remaining time doing more of what you love, peacefully.

Doesn’t that sound simple and interesting?

Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. – Albert Einstein

    What is your homemaking purpose?

To add true value to the lives of your loved ones or just focus on your homemaking success?

By that, I mean in the same example as above. You think you spent the time productively decluttering and organizing stuff in an attractive way.

But that may be the last thing your husband wants to notice when he’s freakin starving after a hard day.

Do you think the decor thing added any value to your life at that point in time? It would have – if it was a relaxing day.

    You get the point.

A place for everything, everything in its place. – Benjamin Franklin

Every homemaker should adhere to this substantial rule that’ll save you time, energy, and sanity.

It is a sign of a well-kept home.

Nothing affects productivity more adversely than searching for things when you’re racing against time.

Having this rule will also discipline your kids to be super organized in life.

Order and simplification are the first steps toward the mastery of a subject – Thomas Mann

Work simplification and creating some sort of system will allow you to persevere in this long-drawn-out job of homemaking.

It can’t be the other way around.

Work simplification defines the breakdown of daily chores into small workable parts and eliminating unnecessary steps to save time, energy, and pressure of completing a task.

Establishing simple systems and routines will bring you more free time, peace, and harmony to make memories with your loved ones, something we yearn for.

Wanting less is probably a better blessing than having more – Mary Ellen Edmunds

The fewer number of clothes means they’ll be used repeatedly – less to clean, less to fold and put away, less to iron, and less to organize.

Limited utensils – continually used – less to wash and less to put away.

Minimal furniture – Less to move while cleaning, less to dust and wipe down, less to maintain.

Bare minimum stuff in the house – less to declutter, less to organize, and less to think about.

Leaving you with – more peace, more time, and more liveliness.

    Indeed a blessing!

    Final words:

I live by these rules to simplify and frame my homemaking for an incredibly joyful experience.

  • SIMPLIFY YOUR HOUSEWORK: 10 Tips for Homemakers

SIMPLIFY YOUR HOUSEWORK: 10 Tips for Homemakers

If you’re overwhelmed by staying on track with your household duties. Then you have come to the right place. Here are some wonderful ways to simplify your housework so you become a rockstar homemaker.

Simplifying your housework can be as relieving as it sounds to be.

Our house deservedly needs our attention, nurturing, and dedication to feel like a home. Something seemingly impossible in today’s fast-paced world. Where more possessions are seen as wealth. And, busyness as being productive. This can often turn out to be burdensome and overwhelming.

    Reasons to Simplify your housework?

To be more intentional about homemaking.

The more stuff we own the more it calls for attention.

Unlike the older times, women today, have got to earn their livelihood to supplement the family income, alongside home-keeping, which can result in higher pressure.

    10 Ways To Simplify Homemaking

The key to defeating this stress is simplifying the most important areas of our lives.

Removing meaningless — belongings, activities, and people from your life so there’s more room for what truly matters; for things that bring joy to your heart.

Decluttering and having fewer options is an impactful way to minimize decision-making, the root cause of getting overwhelmed.

Every day, there are so many things in the back of our minds.

A load of laundry lying in front of the washer/unfolded pile of clothes on the bed, the meat you forgot to set out for dinner, overdue bills, incomplete work assignments, and the doctor’s appointment? All screaming at you.

Everything can be simplified and streamlined.

Today, we’ll have a look at some areas you can simplify to bring harmony to homemaking.

SIMPLIFY YOUR HOUSEWORK: 10 Amazing Tips for Homemakers

    1) Simple meals:

A significant part of home management is meal preparation. And the biggest ever question in the homemaker’s mind is “what to cook for dinner?”

The problem with trying to make specialty meals every day is — it implies prolonged hours of work to cook the basic everyday meals. And a lengthy cleanup, thereafter.

    Something not feasible each day.

You’ll be exhausted and might soon want to give up.

Cooking delicacies every day will add complexity to your already busy life.

Rather, keep the meals simple and quick.

Think one-pot meals, quick 15-minute meals, or meals under 30 minutes. I make 7 or less than 7-ingredient meals. Meals that are nutritious, filling, and super easy to make.

    Say no to meh recipes.

Create a capsule menu plan that consists of your family-favorite meals.

Feel free to repeat and rotate these meals throughout the month.

Having fewer recipes makes meal planning, grocery shopping, and pantry stocking super easy.

    2) Simple cleaning routines:

    Have simple routines.

Whether it is daily, weekly, monthly, or annually. Keep your housekeeping routines short and simple by adding no more than 4 or 5 tasks.

Make sure your most important tasks are embedded in your daily routine.

Split the chores into morning, afternoon, and evening routines.

Find a balance by mixing things up — by combining high and low-intensity chores together.

Thereby you’ll know what’s next. And you can come set for easy or tough tasks.

    3) Simple lifestyle:

    Slow living=less stress.

    Remarkably beneficial to your health.

When you eat simple food, get good rest because you have more time, quit the rat race, you stay healthy.

    4) Simple cleaning methods:

    Adopt simple cleaning methods.

Increase the regularity of your cleaning routines to ensure everything cleans in a jiffy.

    Use simple cleaning solutions.

Avoid using a ton of cleaning products.

It would be one less job to manage several cleaning products.

    5) Decluttering:

There is so much clutter in our house – big items and bits and pieces.

Get rid of the extra belongings for some peace of mind.

Shopping, cleaning, rearranging, and decorating are time-consuming projects.

Something, I’m sure, you would want to keep well away from. As for me, it is a useless job and totally wasteful spending.

    6) Lower distractions:

Simplifying is all about eliminating distractions to focus on the essentials.

This could be achieved by evaluating time wasters.

TV shows, scrolling through social media feeds, emails, long phone calls, text messaging?

Identify and evade them at least while performing your household duties.

If working in a noisy environment bothers you, schedule your chores while the kids are asleep. Turn off the television and tend to your work.

    7) Simplify your finances:

Consider frugal living to improve your finances and habitat.

    Create a budget.

Review – use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

If you’re just starting out on a frugal journey, take your time.

Don’t just give up on things you’re accustomed to.

Start small. Focus on one thing at a time.

    8) Using modern comforts:

Make the best use of apps to automate your bills, credit card, mortgage, and car payments.

The shopping apps, nowadays, offer the ease of reordering groceries and household supplies if you provide them with your monthly essentials list.

That’ll free up your time and hassle to make a new list, place an order, and check out repeatedly.

    9) Learning to say NO:

Hate to hang out with the gossiping group of moms after school?

Tell them you have an important meeting lined up, you haven’t had your lunch yet😀, or anything, in a polite way.

Don’t waste your time (to please people) just because they want you to mingle with them.

    Time is a valuable resource.

Do not hesitate to say NO to someone or something not worth your time.

    10) A little organization:

A manual or digital calendar or a notebook can greatly assist in jotting down doctor’s appointments, parent-teacher conferences, kids’ activities, pets’ check-ups/grooming appointments, community events, birthdays, etc.

A digital note with a reminder alert or a manual one located at an easily noticeable place can do.

You can also refer to Pinterest for some pretty noticeboard ideas for your kitchen.

    Final words:

Those were some easy-to-follow yet effective steps to simplify your housework and make a homemaker’s life so much easier.

Determine the areas you want to streamline. Then plan out, and start working.

Simplifying can be different for every person. So, work out your zones to which you want to slow down and bring intentionality.

  • 8 Daily Habits For A Clean Kitchen

8 Daily Habits For A Clean Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home and how orderly it is can make or break your day.

It is hard to make time for deep cleaning the kitchen. Bi-annual deep cleaning is a good idea when you’re a busy mom. But, sincerely, that’s a long period of time for such a busy place (like a kitchen) to stay clean. As for being the most active area, it is sure to become a disaster zone.

Similarly, being the primary room, it should be ready to use at any time. A pleasing place for family meals, and for when no-notice guests arrive.

8 Daily Habits For A Clean Kitchen

Another reason to have a clean kitchen is to ensure a germ-free, bacteria-free kitchen area that will reduce the likelihood of attracting pests – ants, cockroaches, and rats.

I throw up my hands in despair and look forward to eating out when I have a sink full of dishes or an unruly messy worktop.

Establishing these daily habits will help you overcome all of the aforementioned inconveniences, and experience a squeaky-clean kitchen all the time:

8 DAILY HABITS FOR A CLEAN KITCHEN

    1) Begin your day in a clean kitchen:

Is there any mess from the last night? Food ingredients, dirty dishes, garbage, or spills on the kitchen top? Take a few minutes to get that away, first.

Move all the dirty dishes out of the sink. Run the sink with hot water. Add dish soap. Let the dishes soak well while you clear the countertops.

Put away spice jars, sauce bottles, or anything that should go inside the refrigerator or cabinets.

Complete one task before moving on to the next.

Gather all garbage. Pick all of the wet garbage, wrappers, and boxes.

    Now you’re halfway there.

Quickly wash the dishes in case of handwashing or start the dishwasher. Wash down the kitchen top.

Preferably this cleanup should be done after each meal or at least twice a day.

But it can still be done once at night to clear off anything that is remaining from the day and enable a fresh start with fresh energy.

    2) Clean the sink after dishes:

Two things have made me habituated to this and I’m so thankful for it. One is the FlyLady shining your sink method.

Second, I can’t remember where I read once – how vintage homemakers kept their homes clean.

In that article, it was referred that they washed their sink after washing dishes following every meal. It struck me hard.

Those homemakers tried their hardest without any modern conveniences like we have today. I was really embarrassed.

The kitchen sink is the place where all the important tasks are carried out: washing – fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, utensils, pet eating/drinking bowls, and whatnot. Hence, it collects dirt, and grease, and is brimming with various kinds of bacteria and microbes.

Developing a habit of cleaning the sink once a day and disinfecting it a couple of times a week will ensure proper cleanliness and safety.

Learn how to clean your kitchen sink here.

    3) Deal with the leftovers immediately:

I have been really bad at this.

I use to let the leftover food sit there for hours and come back only to know the food has gone bad.

I regret dumping so much food because of my poor habit of negligence.

Now that I tend to it immediately, it saves me a lot of time and energy to cook fresh meals a couple times every week.

    4) Have a trash container:

Have a bowl to collect scraps and waste in one place while prepping food.

This helps prevent frequent trips to throw the waste.

Having the garbage bin under the sink is a nice plan too.

    5) Make use of cook-time:

This technique has been so much helpful.

Most recipes call for at least 30 minutes of cooking/baking time. That’s a lot of time to clean up all the cooking messes.

Clear up the trash, clean the utensils, wipe off grease from the walls, and clean up the countertops.

Challenge yourself to get more done during this time. If this is done and there’s still some more time in your hands, move forward and quickly declutter a cabinet drawer or wipe down cabinet doors.

There will be considerably less to clean later on.

    6) Make organizing a top priority:

Declutter and organize every now and then.

Do you have to move spice supplies, knife rack, and so, in order to use your worktop? Chances are you have a cluttered space.

Start by removing things that are occupying space in your cabinets that you no longer use. Sell them. Donate them. Just get rid of them.

Now you have more room to store daily essentials – blenders, canisters, etc

Store things in the order of their usage. Things that are used often in the front and occasionally used at the back.

Cleanup is easier when you don’t have to move things around.

    7) Don’t forget the floors:

Having the floors swept or vacuumed makes a huge difference. Your kitchen clean-up would be incomplete without this step.

Quickly go through — pick up things and give the floors a good sweep before your call it a day.

    8) Have a basket:

Have a basket to gather the items that don’t belong to the kitchen – mail, papers, toys, books, stationery, etc.,

If your kids are older they can help you restore things.

Else, get back to it later. For now, focus on the kitchen.

Keeping a basket will make tidying cinch.

    Final words:

Now we have it. 8 easiest daily habits for a clean kitchen. Don’t try to follow them altogether.

Don’t overstress even when you haven’t been doing any of them.

Just pick one or two habits (whichever you find easier) and work on them until they come naturally to you. Then proceed with a few others.

Thank you so much for reading. Happy Cleaning!

  • Homemaker Morning Routine – My Morning Routine As A Housewife

Homemaker Morning Routine – My Morning Routine As A Housewife

    Ah! The morning routine!

    Something we often hear.

Before bringing order to my mornings I used to wonder how people are so big on routines?

How do they manage to do everything in such a timely manner? Meaning – wake up early, exercise, meditate, have a healthy breakfast?!

Homemaker Morning Routine - My Morning Routine As A Homemaker

The way you spend your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day!

    So being vigilant is crucial.

Having a productive morning routine was something I longed for but never made it.

I enjoyed accomplishing essential tasks every morning to get my day off to a good start.

I wanted to create a productive morning routine because I knew the practices I wanted to integrate into my routine were the cornerstones of success.

In homemaking, the chances of getting off the track are high because we lack accountability.

    We’re our own boss.

    We aren’t answerable to anyone.

We have ample time. And then we also have our devices — phones and television. Voila, yet another leisurely day😉!

Kidding aside, that would leave you feeling terrible as you hit the sack. I have been through it.

After struggling to create a perfect daily routine, I figured that the classic daily routines don’t work for everyone.

We all have different priorities which keep changing along with the seasons of life.

The routines of the people I follow for motivation don’t work for me because my priorities vary.

Routines designed to fulfill individual requirements are most promising for us.

We hang on to habits/routines that produce positive results.

Today I am sharing my realistic morning routine relevant to my needs.

You might find it more distinctive than what we usually see. But this is what works for me.

I encourage you to fine-tune your morning routine for great success.

    So, here we go.

    • Wake up at 6:30 a.m. Make bed. Open curtains. Take out the trash. Freshen up. Start a load of laundry.
    • Refill drinking water at 7:00 a.m.
    • Put clean dishes away by 7:10 a.m.
    • Do my quick 10-minute exercise routine; pranayam for 5 minutes; spend time with my plants/meditate/write a gratitude journal (depending on what I feel that day) for another 5 minutes. So that’s around 7:45 a.m.
    • Swish and swipe the bathroom before taking a shower. Get dressed by 8:05 a.m.
    • Spend time (30 minutes) with God.
    • Eat breakfast at 9:15 a.m. — So that’s 20-25 minutes to prepare breakfast (depending on what I am making). Then, we slow down to eat our breakfast. Breakfast is our main meal. And so I make a point to cook something quite nourishing (from scratch). No cereals. Nothing off-the-shelf. No shortcuts. Complete homemade breakfast. So that takes me time.
Homemaker Morning Routine - My Morning Routine As A Homemaker [Updated]
    Some random clicks
    • In the meantime, I check my phone — emails, comments, or messages and reply to them. Chit-chat with my husband.
    • Blog work 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. — design and schedule pins, outline/write/edit the articles, etc
    • Clean up breakfast by 10:45 a.m.
    • Straighten the house, dust, wipe down surfaces, line-dry washed laundry, and sweep and mop the floor by 11:15 a.m.
    • Prepare and eat lunch by 12:30 p.m. Clean up post-lunch (wipe down stove top and wash dishes) by 12:40 p.m. I utilize my cooking time to clean as I go. I use that time to empty the scraps/trash bowl and quickly rinse mixing bowls, spatulas, spoons, and things I use for meal preparation; and wipe down the countertops. That way I have less work post-lunch.

That’s all for my morning routine.

As you see my mornings are productive (with laundry, cooking, dishes, pick up, floors, exercising, journaling, and blog work done) yet peaceful.

I give myself flexible working hours as I cannot live by the clock.

My primary concern is getting meals ready on time. The second important thing is fulfilling the cleaning and tidying chores for the day.

Completing these core tasks in the first half of the day I feel accomplished.

That’s not how my mornings looked before and during the pandemic.

If you have read this post earlier, you know I didn’t spend time with God and exercise in the morning.

However, I thoroughly overhauled my morning routine and incorporated all the activities I desired to accomplish at the beginning of the day.

I cannot tell how energized and better I feel now.

I hope you find some motivation to create a successful morning routine that works for you.

I hope you find inspiration to create a successful morning routine that works for you.

I would love to know your thoughts and don’t forget to share with me your morning routine. Thank you so much for reading. Happy Homemaking!

Along with intense cleaning checklists and motivation tips, having essential cleaning tools are important. Because to be honest, no one have I ever seen loves to clean. Today, we’re going to take a look at the essential cleaning tools and supplies that could be useful.

15 AFFORDABLE CLEANING TOOLS FOR EVERY HOME

    1) Sweeper/Broom and Mop

Ever thought about what all our floor surface collects in a day?

Dropped sticky food, dried food crumbles, pet hair, dirt underneath our shoes, dust, and soil can build up when the floors aren’t cleaned regularly.

One of the easiest ways to get control over this is by sweeping and mopping the floors regularly.

Sweeping before you mop is a quick and effective way to remove dirt, debris, hair, or any harmful substance on the floor.

The good old broom is an economical, handy dandy tool that helps clean the floor quickly, on a daily basis.
