    Looking for some home office ideas on a tiny budget? You have come to the right place.

    In the current lockdown (due to the rise of COVID-19) working from home has become a necessity.

    Some of us are already working from home while others have to conduct their office work at home to work remotely.

    This article is for anyone who wants to set up a home office more urgently with fewer supplies available.

    Let’s see how you can set up an office desk by repurposing the items you already have in your home.

    It might not be a Pinterest-worthy home office right now.

    But you can anytime go ahead and redo it once you get back to your normal routine.

    So, for now, let’s have a look at some possible steps:

    1) Come up with a plan:

    Firstly, figure out if you truly need an office desk set up.

    Meaning –

    • Does your office work involve printer/scanner usage, filing papers, or keeping bill records?
    • Or do you only need a folder/shelf to store all your files?
    • Do you use a desktop computer with a CPU, keyboard, mouse, or laptop?
    • Do you wish to own an attractively decorated work area? Or you’re more productive in a minimally set up, organized space?

    Understanding all this facilitates things.

    One example: for blogging, I need a laptop, notebook, and pen (to outline my blog posts). So, I don’t have a home office. I work from my couch or any comfortable place in my home.

    Once this is determined, start mapping out an action plan. Depending on your work type, make a detailed list of the items required for a home office. The amount of space needed for the desk, cabinets, etc.,

    Remember, we’re setting up this home office in a lockdown situation. So, purchasing something might be difficult at the moment.

    2) Pick a spot:

    Determining an area can depend on several other factors as well.

    • Would you be able to work in noisy surroundings?
    • Do you have an extra room?
    • If you live in a small house, do you have spare space?

    Consider the area near a window that delivers plenty of light and a positive workplace.

    Natural daylight will boost energy levels and reduce eye and work strains. Also, it’ll lower energy bills.

    3) Repurpose the items:

    If you do not have a desk, think about restructuring or making new use of the pre-existing items in your home.

    Think dresser, rectangular bookshelf, broken door, or broken piano that you can DIY a little to transform into a functional and nice-looking desk.

    A flat chest/wooden toy box will be great for storing files while using its top for a desk (in the case of a laptop).

    Storage baskets for holding files and desk organizers for pens, markers, scissorspaper clips, name cards, etc.,

    A portable desk is great for laptop users.

    An organized desk boosts productivity.

    Therefore, attempt to keep your office desk organized by keeping only the essential items.

    Develop a habit of weekly clean-up from the get-go. So you don’t have to deal with a big mess later on.

    5) Focus on functionality:

    Despite the style features, it would be better to focus on the functionality of your workspace.

    Even though it’s a larger space, if it is not useful, it’s hardly worth it.

    Do you need all the files, the pile of bills, and a bunch of pens together?

    Also, what about that coffee mug sitting on the desk since morning?

    Clean up. You deserve a pleasant workplace.

    Consider stocking your pantry with whole food that works as a base for any dish. You need basic items to cook a meal: flour, rice, lentils, beans, potatoes, bananas, apples, eggs, oil/butter, milk, sugar, salt, and pepper.     Foodstuffs such as rice, beans, or potatoes make the meal more filling. Apple, bananas, and milk make a complete breakfast too. Omelets, and banana smoothies, for instance.

    Do you grab a take-out because you don’t want to deal with the lengthy cooking procedures?

    I’m sure, you’ve heard about many different meal-planning techniques. That’s because meal planning is no one size fits all approach. What works for you might not meet someone else’s requirements.

    I cannot stress enough the fact that a little planning and prep up goes a long way in accomplishing things. Meal planning is no different.

    Cooking is an inevitable part. Hence it’s always better to simplify things for yourself if you really want to eat at home, most days a week. When you have a menu plan, you’re motivated to purchase the ingredients required for the selected recipes. With little prep, you’re likely to cook at home.

    I used to grocery shop recklessly. And buy a lot of packaged food along with healthy stockpiles.

    A meal plan is a list of weeks worth of meals.

    It usually includes breakfast and dinner recipes, that you pre-plan to make in the forthcoming week. The chart works like a roadmap.

    On a weekend/weekday, you sit down for 10-15 minutes to plan meals and make a grocery list. And follow that plan, throughout the week without having to spend your time and energy deciding what to cook for dinner, every single day.

    This will ensure harmonious daily routines.

    Sometimes we may think having a well-stocked pantry will allow us to skip meal planning. It doesn’t work for me. It still takes up energy to determine what to cook. It’s like “a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear” thing for me. This technique might work if you plan and prep up at least the night before.

    Before we start with our three-step meal planning method, if you’re a beginner, you have an additional step to do. Which I suggest you do in your leisurely time and not while planning your meals.

    1. Jot down all the meals that your family enjoys. (you can include breakfast recipes along with main meals)

    2. From these, pick the meals that everyone likes in common, in your family.

    3. Now, sort some quick and easy one-pot meal recipes out of the list. They can be your go-to recipes when you’re short on time. One-pot meals can come in handy when you’ve had a long day, not feeling well, or having a lazy day.

    4. This list of recipes is your dinner and breakfast options which you‘ll need at the time of weekly meal planning for reference. You can get it printed or write it in a planner.

    Meal Planning in Three Easy Steps:

    1. Menu plan:

    Note down the meals for the week.

    This is the time to decide:

    how many meals do you want to cook in a week?

    Plan leftover days, full meals, quick meals, crockpot meals, and eat-outs.

    For example: if you want to cook 6 days a week. Aim for 3 full meals, 2 quick meals, 1 leftover day, and a day off for eat-out. For busier days, slow-cooker recipes could be very helpful.

    This kind of balance will help keep things interesting.

    If you have a bigger family try to incorporate everyone’s favorite meal into the week. Ask your family to suggest what they would like to have for the week?

    Take into account, beans, veggies, sprouts, grains, leafy veggies, fish, chicken, eggs, and meats to add variety for a healthy balanced diet.

    You can plan your breakfast as well to start your day on a healthy note.

    2. Grocery list and shopping:

    Make a list of the ingredients you need for the whole week’s meal plan.

    I recommend using the Note App to quickly write down the menu plan and grocery list.

    Using an app helps avoid dealing with papers, planners, sticky notes, markers, etc., It makes editing easier and saves time from rewriting the lists. Plus, you can head out shopping conveniently with your phone.

    Group ingredients together like dairy stuff, veggies, spices, meats, etc., to waste no time at the grocery store.

    To save money, I urge you to take an inventory before leaving for grocery shopping. Remove the items that you already have. Make it a point to stick to the list.

    If you’re someone who likes to ‘shop on sale’ meaning shop things that are on sale in that particular week. Then, you will have to grocery shop first and make a meal plan around the items you have purchased.

    3. Meal prep:

    Prepping up your meals is helping your future self. You’ll be relieved and thankful you did.

    It’s like getting a chunk of work done earlier. Which is gonna make cooking a breeze!

    Being realistic with prepping up is important though.

    Cutting the veggies a week before and storing them in a plastic container is unhealthy.

    I suggest doing the chopping, kneading, and marinating work the night before. Things like organizing the pantry and refrigerator for easy access, washing and storing fruits and veggies, dry roasting, peeling green peas, garlic, carrots, and bunching ingredients together can be done a week before.

    Final Words:

    Planning meals in advance make grocery shopping and cooking at home easier. It is healthy and stress-relieving. Meal planning saves a lot of time, energy, and money.

    As I look back on my childhood days, I remember, when my brother and I returned from school – our home was filled with the delicious aroma of steaming hot food set for lunch.

    Everything was put back in its place. The floors were mopped clean. The bed was nice and crisp and the bathroom neat and tidy.

    We had a small house. There were no bins and baskets organizing system in those days, still, everything was pretty organized.

    Growing up in such a neat, clean, and tidy home, always made me want to own a home like that when I was married. My mom was my inspiration. I wanted to be like her. She is the ideal homemaker I have ever known.

    Why I love Being A Homemaker

    At all times, I found myself enjoying and having the most wonderful time in the safest place on the earth, My Home. Honestly, I wasn’t interested in studying and working outside the home at all.

    All I wanted was to be home, care for my family, and be there 24/7 for them. I desired to keep the house clean, cook meals, run errands, and work from home. And do all this with love, care, and respect.

    Also, being a follower of God, I wanted to play the role of a nurturer and caretaker, whole-heartedly.

    I admit I cannot even do half of what my mom did and still does as a homemaker. She never took a break, never ordered a take-out. Never, even when she was unwell.

    She did not find any shortcuts to homemaking and didn’t like using appliances and equipment. All her work is handmade and elaborate. Regardless of how much I love homemaking, I cannot carry it out to this degree.

    Today I am sharing with you some approaches and the reasons why I love being a homemaker/stay-at-home wife:

    1. My own version of homemaking:

    That means I manage my home single-mindedly. I plan, cook, clean, declutter and organize at my convenience using my personalized methods.

    As I said in the earlier post, it’s easy to hire a cleaner in India, you have to adapt to their way of cleaning, cooking; timings, and their off days. Working with them is more of a pain than helpful to me. I have had enough in the earlier years of my marriage. The result? I gave up on the idea of hiring help.

    Housework was super uncomplicated and stress-free when I did it myself. With time, I fell in love with homemaking. Now, I want to manage my home independently without anyone else’s involvement.Why I love Being A Homemaker

    2. I am available 24/7:

    My husband is my high priority. I am constantly there to make sure that he eats well, exercises, and gets good rest. To get him to relax when he’s home after a long day, to listen to what he has to say, to provide him with a peaceful and safe environment, and to get his favorite food ready on the table before he arrives.

    I am also available when my parents or in-laws need help with their doctor’s visits or when they need any other assistance because I believe physical assistance is as important as financial support.

    We’ve all witnessed the sensitivity when our parents or husband had to go to work when we were ill just because they didn’t get a leave from the office.

    Recalling childhood memories, I have seen my class buddies getting lonesome because of their parents working outside. I can’t bear this in the case of my family.

    3. My husband is able to focus on his work:

    Since I take care of the house, he can focus on his work. This is vital to get your home running smoothly. My husband is able to give his work his 100%. He has ample time to learn new techniques and improve his skills at work.

    4. I save money on the household bills:

    Being at home, I look for ways to save money as much as possible. The basics include electricity, cooking gas, water consumption, home cooking, groceries, etc., My commute expenses are saved as well.

    5. I lead a stress-free life:

    It’s difficult for me to imagine my life as a 9-5 working woman. I cannot handle such tight schedules – everything is just set on time and stressful.

    The best part about being a homemaker is that I do not have to travel every day or be under anyone’s supervision for the next 8 or 10 hours. I lead a free and happy life as a homemaker.

    I also get enough time for myself to take care of my health, skin, and hair; spend time with my husband; work on my blog, pursue hobbies, meet friends, meditate, read, etc.,Why I love Being A Homemaker

    Here’s a big confession – I am a night owl! Hence, I am more active in the evenings. I want my mornings to be relaxing. So, I’ve created my routines in such a way that I carry out the bigger tasks like doing the dishes, laundry, sweep-mop, bathroom, and bathroom deep cleaning, and tidying up in the evening.

    Staying at home has given me this liberty. Otherwise, I had to rush to the office in the morning without any excuse. By being at home, I am free to make changes in my schedule as the situation demands.

    We bargain at our best in every section.

    Women have their secret cash boxes in the kitchen. Kitchen? To keep it safe and out of reach of husband and children.

    Use tiny pouches to collect loose change which adds up to a specific amount after a few days.

    Figure out the best places to shop where we will get value for money.

    Strive to get some space in public transport because it is a cheaper alternative.

    Buy our monthly groceries in bulk.

    Make every possible attempt to save on utilities.

    These are some of the general money-saving ways followed in India.

    But, every household is different, and therefore, their money management system also differs a little bit if not much.

    I love to stay home to look after my husband more than work outside. Many times, shouldering the responsibility for homemaking is as important as earning money. This divided sense of responsibility allows us to focus and concentrate on our work respectively. And, creates harmony in the relationship.

    Even after belonging to a frugal family, there was a time, I was poor at managing money.

    One time, I stumbled across the quote, “Penny saved is a penny earned”. It was so impactful that it entirely moved my focus from earning to saving. I looked for areas where I could eliminate as many expenses as I could; I observed that household and lifestyle changes were the better areas to start with.How I Save Money On One Income (With No Kids)

    I started slowly and steadily. And now, with little effort and mindfulness, I save a particular amount of money at the end of each month. I consider this amount of money as “My Earnings”. And, because of this outlook, I strive to save as much as I can to increase my monthly earnings. I regard this as a little assistance on my part to support my husband’s hard work.

    Here are a few ways I save money on income:

    HOW I SAVE MONEY ON ONE INCOME (With No Kids)

    1. One car and small house:

    We are a family of two – my husband and I. We do not have kids. I work from home. So, there’s no point in having an extra car.

    As for the home, we don’t need a big one. We both prefer to live within our means. And, don’t believe in going into debt for a big house. We’re living a debt-free=content life in our small house.

    Also, a small house has the advantages of less electricity, less water consumption, and hence lower utility bills.

    2. Meal Planning and cooking at home:

    Cooking at home saves roughly about 30-40% of the monthly expenses. Planning the meals ahead and making a grocery list helps avoid impulse buying.

    3. I avoid buying too many cleaning products:

    Do you really need so many expensive products if you clean your house regularly? I mean one for floors, one for the bathroom, and the other for the toilet? The answer is NO. The basic cleaning products do a great job of keeping the house clean.

    The products that I use are – dishwashing liquid+baking soda+white vinegar. These three primary products are adequate to clean pretty much anything in the house.

    4. We don’t spend on gym membership:

    My husband loves brisk walking in the open (outside) for 30 minutes 5 times a week. Yes, I agree, walking does not count as a workout. It is just a physical activity. But that’s the only form of exercise he loves. And, my attitude towards exercising is – something is better than nothing.

    I love to do yoga in the comfort of my home. This saves us almost $43 (Rs 3,000/-) on a monthly gym membership.

    5. I do not buy home decor items:

    Since I have a small house I try to keep the decor items to a minimum. A clutter-free home is more beautiful than an accessorized one for me. This saves a lot of cleaning time as well.

    6. I do not hire a cooking or cleaning maid:

    It’s easier to hire a cleaning and cooking maid in India. But I prefer to do all the housework and cooking on my own. I am a little OCD about cleaning. And, cannot entrust the most important tasks of my household (Cleaning and cooking) to anyone.

    This helps me save not less than $114 (Rs 8,000/-) a month. A pretty good amount, right?

    7. DIY hair and beauty treatments:

    I go to salons for facial threading and to get my hair trimmed only. And, do the rest by myself at home. I scrub my face once in 10 days. Apply a homemade mask when I need some hair treatment.

    Take care of my nails, toes, and feet while in the shower. I paint my nails at home.

    The average cost of the package that includes (facial+waxing+manicure+pedicure) is somewhere around $30 (Rs2,100/-) in Mumbai. I save that much amount with these quick and easy DIY treatments.

    Yes, we buy in bulk our clothes as well. We take advantage of the end-of-the-season sale, which happens to be 2 or 3 times per year, in India.

    During the sales, we buy everything from shoes to accessories to handbags, every single thing. In between, we avoid going to malls to avoid impulse purchases.

    10. By canceling cable subscription:

    From the time I started blogging, we’ve canceled our cable subscription. Since I hardly get any time to watch Television. Rather I don’t WANT to.

    And, with the option of having so much entertainment available on the internet, cable was a sheer waste of money.

    These are some of the areas I save comfortably without affecting our standard of living in any way. Yes, we do spend on eat-outs and date nights, but we limit it to once a week.

    I don’t believe in going out of the way to spend or being a cheapskate either. And, firmly believe in maintaining a balance in order to persist.

    So, we have fun when we need a break from the daily rut while also being sensible about our spending.
