    In the earlier post, we discussed what is simple living and 3 super simple ways to start a simple life. If you haven’t already, you can check that post here. Today, we’ll look at some practical ways to simplify your life.

    Simplifying refers to getting rid of the excess, minimizing possessions and complexities, and making everything clear and easy.

     

    Simplifying your life — you would remove all the unwanted/unused stuff and reduce it to bare essentials.

    While purging, you’ll come across what you’re core needs are and what items/choices serve you in a positive way.
     
    Organizing these items/choices in a more functional way will make your life simpler, alleviate stress, and allow you to concentrate on the important matters of life.
     
    Since simplifying is about lowering your possessions we’ll focus on 9 areas where you can minimize. The areas that’ll bring immediate and most powerful change in your life.

    9 AMAZING WAYS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE IN 2021

    1. Fewer clothes:

    Digging into a closet flooded with mostly unfavorite or worthless clothes is a terrible start to the morning.

    The guilt of squandering, the clock ticking, and the pressure of pulling everything together — invoke negative vibes right at the beginning of the day. 

    Simplifying your wardrobe could be a quick fix. Also, a wardrobe is a better start to gaining momentum.

    Start by removing all the ill-fitted and unloved clothes from your closet. Toss or donate them.

    Looking at a closet full of the only clothes you love would motivate you to keep on in the areas of life.

    Once you pick your favorites, you can create a capsule wardrobe by trying on and working the pieces together, to create different looks out of the same clothes. 

    2. Fewer duplicates:

    Do you actually use those 50 different shades of lipsticks, 60 hair ties, 45 coffee mugs, 14 towels, 17 handbags, and hundreds and thousands of spares?

    I know, we rarely consider getting rid of them thinking they’re useful.

    On a quiet day, note which items you use to cook meals. Separate the lipsticks you use throughout the week, in a small pouch.  Observe which coffee mug you reach out for, every morning. You’ll learn you hang on to only a few items of them.

    Everything else is cluttered.

    3. Less media:

    Television and mobile phone consume an enormous amount of time. You turn on your television to watch one show and 3 hours are gone.

    Do the negatives of drama shows, news channels, and endless gossip add value to your life in any way?

    People who complain about time constraints must reassess their media time.

    With many of us working online, going even a day without a phone or the internet is serious.

    But you can certainly consider ditching your phone while having meals. When hanging out with your family. During kids’ study time. While spending time with God or working in the house, exercising, and meditating.

    One way to do this is by turning off the push notifications. Or switching to do not disturb mode.

    Identify triggers and act accordingly. Set aside a certain amount of time for media and focus on your life at other times.

    4. Shop less:

    Want to get out of the rut of decluttering routinely?

    Abstaining from shopping is the answer.

    Identifying the real cause when you find yourself shopping more often is important to overcome the issue.

    Does the heartbreak, sadness, or simply feeling isolated make you shop for new things to feel better?

    But does shopping actually makes you feel better? Is shopping a habit or do you try to keep up with the Joneses?

    Find an alternative hobby or another way out as shopping is all fun only for a while but it can’t be the solution. In fact, the clutter from acquiring a lot of stuff will complicate your life more.

    5. Multitask less:

    Having multiple tabs open on the computer screen, listening to podcasts/watching television while walking on a treadmill, talking to someone while driving a car, texting/chatting while cooking, and cooking several dishes at one time.

    The examples of just how we unconsciously multitask in our daily life are endless.

    If you think you’re saving a slew of time and being more productive by multitasking then you’re sorely mistaken, my friend.

    Travis Bradberry said, “Every time you multitask you aren’t just harming your performance at the moment; you may very well be damaging an area of your brain that’s critical to your future success at work.”

    I think the reason is enough to stop multitasking. Still, running hither and thither slows you down and hampers your efficiency.

    Even the tasks take longer to accomplish than they would do performing one at a time.

    Our minds concentrate merely on a single thing at a time. Doing multiple activities at one time affects the quality of work as well.

    6. Paperless:

     I don’t know about you but sorting through, filling, and recycling papers is a pain for me. Receipts, utility bills/invoices, newspapers, magazines, takeaway food flyers, invitations, etc create unwanted clutter.

    Thanks to high technology going paperless is achievable.

    Through a computerized system, I find — scanning, keeping track of papers, and finding them through the search option of your electronic filing system is super easy; saving hours of work stirring through the piles of paper to find important documents.

    Keeping the record digitally is particularly useful in the case of health records, bills, banking details, etc.,

    7. Less ‘Yes’:

    Have the work deadlines, family responsibilities, and social activities overbooked your schedule?

    Do you constantly feel overwhelmed and that you don’t have time for yourself?

    It’s time to pause and reevaluate your time and commitments and learn to say NO for your own good.

    I know, the issue of overscheduling arises when you can’t say no. 

    • You can’t say no to family commitments because you could never make them unhappy.
    • You can’t say no to your boss because you don’t want to appear as a negative employee.
    • You can’t say no to your friends because you don’t want to appear rude.

    But where does your own time lie in between trying to please everyone around you?

    A courteous no can help you find that much-needed space for yourself.

    8. Unfollow and unsubscribe:

    The reason to unfollow and unsubscribe from unwanted people and subscriptions again may be great for your sanity and your bank account.

    In the Internet world, apps and websites especially shopping sites want you to subscribe to and follow them on social media.

    Additionally, if you let them have your contact number then you’re sure to be bombarded with an infinite number of notifications throughout the day. 

    Also, once in a while, taking a good look at whom you follow on social media, and how it makes you feel (positive or negative) is crucial for your emotional well-being.

    9. Automate more:

    Your hands are constantly full of work, family, and home — that it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day.

    Today, everything and anything that you can think of could be automated. Right from cleaning appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, self-cleaning ovens, frost-free refrigerators, robot vacuum cleaners, robotic lawnmowers, and so much more, to automated bill payment methods, to free home-delivery grocery service.

    It is being clear about where you want to arrive in life.

    How much and what do you need to lead a happy life?

    It’s about being regardful that your actions aren’t doing any harm to the environment, and being aware of the use of resources available to you.

    You want to live simply because you want to lower distractions and focus on leading a meaningful life built upon your values and things that bring you joy and happiness.

    Simple living is concerned with living a content life without materialistic possessions; it is consuming less and moving closer to nature.

    Let me explain the significance of simple living with a couple of examples here:

    In today’s age of medical cosmetology and aesthetics, why are we more drawn towards buying cosmetics that state “organic” or “full of natural ingredients”? 

    #2: Why are California, Bali, Costa Rica, Thailand, etc the most attractive places known for peace and serenity?

    The point is, humans around the globe have raised their living standards to such a large degree that they look for a 2000sq ft house for a family of 4. For this, they’ve scaled up the removal of trees or deforestation.

    After doing so, they also google things like “best places to visit for peace and relaxation” or “Nature resorts or jungle resorts near me” to find a quick getaway from a busy life.

    They do this because somewhere our consciousness is deeply inclined towards the roots. We know, we’re aware of where peace is; where true happiness is. Where the true meaning of life is.

    I don’t understand amongst the 2 trillion galaxies in the universe – how on earth is someone’s “perfume/beauty BRAND” going to make a difference? 

    So, based on the reality of life let’s see how you can live a simple life.

    1. Reconsider what you share on social media:

    Do you love to share your extravagant lifestyle on social media?

    There’s nothing wrong with that unless you’re compelled to raise your standards at all times.

    Some people oblige themselves to keep up with society’s “norms” these days, and in order to follow along they get into debt.

    Have you ever seen someone broadcasting their unhappiness or distress on social media platforms?

    Would you yourself like to share your broken relationships, shabby appearances or kitchen fails on Instagram?

    I’m sure no one ever will.

    Because that won’t buy us a ton of likes and approvals.

    We want to praise, even if those praises and commendations are from people whom we never know exist on the face of the earth.

    I don’t know where are we headed… in what direction?

    I chose to add this point in the beginning because it is the main cause of consumerism. And this is where all the more stuff, more wealth, and more pressure sets off.

    Earlier, we only would want to buy something that we saw at our friend’s place or at our neighbors’. But now we’re urged to buy everything that we see on the internet, especially when things are available at the click of a button.

    Consumerism leads to more production, more consumption, and more waste in landfills.

    It’s hard to imagine what place we would leave behind for coming generations?

    Does this “MORE” thing lead us anywhere? Peace of mind? Happiness? Quality time?

    Nothing at all.

    It can only result in temporary joy and steal us of our precious time. Instead of improving our quality of life, it puts more burden on us.

    Rather, learn to live simply. As you step into living a simpler life — your wants and desires would significantly decrease. You would be liberated. You’ll feel lighter. And that feeling itself would spur you on to simplify big time.

    In the end, what matters is not the amount of wealth you’ve accumulated but the quality of life you lived. And I can bet you simple food, simple possessions, and simple practices will give you that quality of life.

    The Haute cuisine won’t comfort you in your sickness like your mom’s hearty soup would do.

    Your leading brand’s stylish coats won’t keep you warm as much as your mom’s hand-knitted sweater would do.

    Stalking on a friend’s profile, or texting for hours cannot match the joy of a few minutes of meet-ups over coffee.

    Binge-watching Netflix series couldn’t be compared with time spent on a beach.

    2. Use fewer chemicals:

    There are countless ways you’re exposed to chemicals around the house. Right from plumbing to paints to wiring to cleaners to storage containers to canned food, to toiletries, and whatnot.

    These chemicals not only affect us but also our environment.

    There’s no way you can eliminate the entirety. But you can lower the impact by curbing its use.

    Especially those things that come in contact with you, daily.

    You can easily switch to natural cleaning products like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon; pick plant-based beauty care; buy fresh or frozen (if cannot buy fresh) over canned food; consider using metal/glass containers over plastic (yes even over BPA free products)

    3) Preserve resources:

    Consider the three Rs — Reduce Reuse Recycle. Before you discard something rethink if it can have a second use.

    Conserve water and electricity by (giving up on dishwashers) and handwashing dishes.

    Unplug appliances/turn off lights when not in use.

    Install water and energy-efficient appliances.

    Wash with a full load of laundry only.

    Line-dry clothes.

    Walk/ride a bike to nearby areas.

    Address the cooking difficulties by planning meals.

    Reduce the cooking time by using a pressure cooker and also by cooking covered.

    Use cloth rags instead of paper towels.

    There are many, many ways you can preserve resources. Just think creatively and that’s all. But before that being aware of the importance of these resources are important.

    As they say, time is the best teacher. No big – fancy houses and cars, no luxuries, and no riches were helpful during the pandemic.

    Everyone, rich and poor, had to be at home and buy only the little that was available.

    During the pandemic, all we wanted was basic food, bare necessities, and a home to stay away from the anxieties and fears of the outside world.

    We got so creative with the limited stuff we could buy.

    Everyone wanted to learn to cook at home since restaurants were closed; stock pantries with sustainable goods and consume groceries sparingly and to the last bit.

    Not that we didn’t have money to buy but because of supply shortages.

    The people who already had a simple lifestyle and consumed less were the least affected since they have been living on less for years now. They could cook their own food from scratch, and they could manage personal-care and home-care products from any brand (in my experience — the stores had in enough stock the brands that people rarely use) because they’re not brand-specific.

    The significance of simple living is well-understood in times of crisis. I think the lesson life has taught us during this pandemic shouldn’t be disregarded.

    Like I said in the beginning, simple living is a practice. Anything you choose to do to live simply has to come from within. And, shouldn’t be imposed. But the end results are guaranteed — You’ll have more time, more money, and more peace.

    Every day, there are so many things in the back of our minds.

    A load of laundry lying in front of the washer/unfolded pile of clothes on the bed, the meat you forgot to set out for dinner, overdue bills, incomplete work assignments, and the doctor’s appointment? All screaming at you.

    Everything can be simplified and streamlined.

    Today, we’ll have a look at some areas you can simplify to bring harmony to homemaking.

    1) Simple meals:

    A significant part of home management is meal preparation. And the biggest ever question in the homemaker’s mind is “what to cook for dinner?”

    The problem with trying to make specialty meals every day is — it implies prolonged hours of work to cook the basic everyday meals. And a lengthy cleanup, thereafter.

    Something not feasible each day.

    You’ll be exhausted and might soon want to give up.

    Cooking delicacies every day will add complexity to your already busy life.

    Rather, keep the meals simple and quick.

    Think one-pot meals, quick 15-minute meals, or meals under 30 minutes. I make 7 or less than 7-ingredient meals. Meals that are nutritious, filling, and super easy to make.

    Say no to meh recipes.

    Create a capsule menu plan that consists of your family-favorite meals.

    Feel free to repeat and rotate these meals throughout the month.

    Having fewer recipes makes meal planning, grocery shopping, and pantry stocking super easy.

    This could be achieved by evaluating time wasters.

    TV shows, scrolling through social media feeds, emails, long phone calls, text messaging?

    Identify and evade them at least while performing your household duties.

    If working in a noisy environment bothers you, schedule your chores while the kids are asleep. Turn off the television and tend to your work.

    7) Simplify your finances:

    Consider frugal living to improve your finances and habitat.

    Create a budget.

    Review – use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

    If you’re just starting out on a frugal journey, take your time.

    Don’t just give up on things you’re accustomed to.

    That’ll free up your time and hassle to make a new list, place an order, and check out repeatedly.

    Hate to hang out with the gossiping group of moms after school?

    Tell them you have an important meeting lined up, you haven’t had your lunch yet😀, or anything, in a polite way.

    Don’t waste your time (to please people) just because they want you to mingle with them.

    Time is a valuable resource.

    Do not hesitate to say NO to someone or something not worth your time.
